Addis Ababa

 CHEF to construct 11 mln. birr cardiac center

A fund raising gala night was organized by The Children’s Heart Fund of Ethiopia (CHEF) at Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel last Saturday to construct a cardiac center here in the metropolis with an outlay of 11 million birr to be launched at the beginning of next Ethiopian year.

The Addis Ababa Administration Council has provided CHEF, an indigenous non-governmental organization, with over 2,300 square meters of land lease-free for the construction of the center. The business tycoon and owner of MIDROC, Sheik Mohammud Hussien Al-amudi has donated 1.5 million birr in support of the effort put into materializing the establishment of the center.

Over 400,000 birr has been raised from the Good Will Social Evening event through the sale of tickets, auction and good will pledge.

CHEF has rescued the lives of over 550 children with heart problems through facilitating surgical treatment at home and abroad expending over 70 million birr over the past 13 years, it was learnt.

 4.5 million private hospital constructed

A private hospital has been constructed at a cost of over 4.5 million birr here in Addis Ababa by Tebib Private Limited Company.

The six-storey Ethio-Tebib Hospital, owned by Dr. Abdella Feyissa, has the capacity of serving up to 200 patients a day and has 25 beds for inpatients. It would deliver dermatology, ophthalmology, gynecology, surgical and general medical services and creates 50 jobs.

The hospital was inaugurated Sunday, July 6, 2003. It was learned that more than 400 health institutions of varying standards have gone operational in the city over the past eight years and the establishment of these institutions has helped the existence of the efficient medical service backed by modern technology.

 Somali, Afar

 Over 23 mln. birr embezzled

According to the Auditor General Office of the Afar State over 23 million birr has been embezzled from various offices, in the state. The misused money was revealed by the audit inspection report conducted on budget utilization of the last two years in 22 offices. It was indicated that the money was expended in violation of appropriate financial rules and procedures. Incomplete bid documents, procurement documents, and other non-reconciled procurement receipts were found by the offices.

Over 208,000 birr budget deficit was reported in 14 offices and the inspections conducted on the interests of certain financial accounts indicated that the financial administration was exposed to abuse.

 Amhara

 6.5 mln. birr agreement signed

 The Ahmara state Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission signed a 6.5 million birr aid agreements with three non –governmental organizations (NGOs Operating in the state). The agreements were signed with Medicine San Frontiers-Holland; Menschen fur Menschen and the Ethiopian Kale –Hiwot Church.

The agreement with Medicine San Frontiers –Holland provides for launching of a prevention and control programme of Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs) by the later in Armachiho Woreda of North Gonder Zone.

The Ethiopian   Kale –Hiowt   Church, on the other hand would provide feeding and medical services as well as educational materials to 292 malnourished and destitute children in Debre Birhane Woreda.

The commission has also signed a 155, 000 birr grant agreement with Menschen für Menschen for the launch of HIV /AIDS prevention and control programme in Mida Woreda of North Shoa Zone.

 Oromia

 The 7th regular session of the Oromia State council has approved a 2.4 billion birr budget for the coming fiscal year. The council also deliberated on the budget proposal and approved over1.2 billion birr and close to 596 million birr to be allocated for the Woredas and for the recurrent budget respectively.

Out of the total budget of 493,970,000 birr, 45 million birr would go for the execution of capital projects, for emergency situation and town development activities respectively.

1.6 million birr was allocated from the Federal Government and the balance to be covered from foreign loans and grants
