City gov’t earmarks 150 mln. birr for industrial sites     development

Some 150 million birr has been allotted to the development of industrial sites this budget year, Land Development Agency of the City Administration said.

Land Development study and Preparation Department head with the Agency, Kassa Hailu, said the City Government has plans to develop three industrial sites in the metropolis during the reported period.

He told Abiyotawi Democracy, a magazine of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), that the Mekanisa-Lebu, Kaliti, and Kality-Mekanisa. Industrial sites due to be refurbished with the necessary infrastructure cover an area of over 169 hectares of land.

 

Authority to launch economic establishments enumerations

 

The Central Statistical Authority announces plan to carryout the enumeration of economic establishments throughout the country.

Authority Deputy General Manager Samiya Zekeria said the enumeration, which would be carried out beginning Mrach 1, 2004 would be a source of information as to the distribution of the establishments in each state.

She made announcement while opening a four-day relevant Training of trainers here Monday at the hall of the black Lion Senior Secondary School.

She said the enumeration would enable to gather information necessary to design policies and strategies while acquainting both local and foreign invertors with investment potential sin he country. 

It would also enable to know the types and numbers of economic establishments including their contribution to employment, she said.

The enumeration would take place in all urban centers in the country, according to the deputy general manager.

Samiya said relevant training would be offered to about 2,000 enumerators who will be deployed for the mission.

About 120 professionals drawn from the branch offices of the authority are attending the training.

Project extends over 3.4 mln. birr loan to low-income women

 

The Women Development Project of the Ethiopian Women Development Fund (EWDF) said it had granted over 3.4 million birr to low-income women in loans during the last one year.

Project Coordinator, Tadelech Debele said the project granted the stated sum on loans to 2,840 beneficiaries living in nine states of the nation.

The coordinator made the statement Saturday at the closing of a two-day annual performance evolution meeting of the project held in Awassa town, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State (SNNPS).

 

Japan, China provide over 667mln. for project implementation

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED) says Japan and China last year provided an over 667 million birr assistance for the implementation of various ongoing projects in Ethiopia.

The ministry announced that 552 million birr obtained form the government of Japan was being utilized in implementation of human resource and infrastructure development projects.

It said the country has also obtained loans and grants from the African Development bank, donors and creditors in the reported period.

According to the ministry, 861 million birr was obtained in loan from the African Development Fund (ADF) and the International Development Association (IFAD) as well as Nordic Development Fund.

The fund was being used in the implementation of the Second Road Sector Development Programme (RSDP II), the rural finance support programme, the flood protection project at the Awash River as well as in the development of pastoralist communities and the rehabilitation of people affected by drought, it added.

 

WFO to reduce food rations to refugees in Ethiopia.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it has been forced to reduce the amount of food distributed to refugees in Ethiopia due to lack of funding. The 126,000 refugees will only receive 70 percent of the food considered adequate for a healthy diet.

To avoid further cuts in food rations and continue feeding the refugees up to the end of December 2004, WFP urgently requires US$10 million. So far it has received only 40 percent  of  the  funds  required and WFP will run out of food in May if further donations are not forthcoming soon.

 "The imminent cut in food rations will put at risk the health and lives of refugees, especially women and children," said Georgia Shaver, WFP Country Director in Ethiopia. "We will be only able to provide 1,500 kilocalories per person per day,  which  is well below the minimum 2,100 kilocalories required to carry out a healthy and active life."

Dire Dawa Hospital receives ophthalmic surgery equipment

The ophthalmology ward of the Dire Dawa Dil chora Hospital received ophthalmic surgery equipment worth over 250,000 birr in donation from two individuals, the Hospital Medical Director said.

Dr. Abnet Taye said that Hadji Mohammed Abdulahi Oxedi and an American philanthropist called Robert F. donated the medical equipment.

The ward, which used to provide treatment to up to 15 patients weekly, previously because of lack of equipment would now be would now be able to provide services to up to 50 patients, he said.

 

Tigray

 

Entrepreneurs construct development projects

Various development projects constructed by 37 entrepreneurs with an aggregate capital of over 14 million birr in Maichew town of Southern Zone of Tigray State have gone operational, the town council said.

General Manager of the town council, Kiros Negussie told WIC that the development projects constructed on over 24,000 square meters of land leased out to entrepreneurs include hotels, garages, a kindergarten, animal husbandry and poultry and a college.

He said the development projects have created employment opportunities for over 300 people in the town.
