TVT centers worth
21.7 mln. birr goes operational
Two technical and
vocational training centers constructed in North Gondar Zone of the
Amhara National Regional State at a cost of 21.7 million birr have
gone operational, officials of the respective woredas said.
The centers built in
Debark and Koladiba towns, have already enrolled 469 students this
current academic year, according to the officials.
Debark Woreda Deputy
Administrator Haile-Sellassie Gebre-Michael said that the Debark
Technical and Vocational Training Center has enrolled 192 students.
Information Office Head
with the Koladiba town Administration, Hussein Redi, also said that
the Koladiba Technical and Vocational Training Center has been
training 277 students in nine fields.
College executes over 50 mln. birr expansion project
The Gondar University
College in the Amhara National Regional State disclosed that it has
managed to admit 3,180 students this Ethiopian academic year following
the completion of expansion works carried out at a cost of more than
50 million birr.
College Dean, Dr. Yared
Wondimkun said that the students are enrolled in two post graduate, 24
first degree and two diploma programmes under the newly opened three
faculties in the college.
He said the college has
opened Law, Business and Social Science faculties in Diploma and first
degree programmes as well as Environmental Health, Sanitation, and
surgery in postgraduate programmes.
According to the college
dean, expansion of the college focusing on the construction of student
dormitories, libraries, and laboratories dining halls has been
undertaken.
Similarly, various
development projects are being carried out in Kelala Woreda of South
Wollo Zone in Amhara State at a cost of over 1.4 million birr, the
woreda administrator said.
Assefa Shibeshi said the
projects include the construction of a primary school, a health post
and five farmers training centers, among others.
Assefa said the
government allocated the fund for the execution of the projects.
Oromia
Zone lease over 400 hectares to investors
Sixteen investors with a
combined capital of over 442 million birr leased over 400 hectares to
carry out horticulture development in West Shoa Zone of the Oromia
State, the zonal investment office said.
The office said two of
the licensed investors in the sector have already begun exporting
flowers while the remaining are undertaking construction activities.
The investment projects
are expected to create job opportunity for over 100,000 people.

Km gravel road constructed
Over 18,000 farmers
living in Digelu and Ticho woredas of Arsi Zone in Oromia state have
constructed a 21-km gravel road in a two-month campaign, the woreda
administrator Wondayehu Dejene announced.
He said the gravel road
links Tenna Woreda with two woredas in the zone.
The construction activity
carried out by the farmers was valued at over 200,000 birr.
Educational facilities go operational
Eighteen new schools and
189 additional classrooms constructed in six woredas of Jimma Zone,
Oromia Regional State, at a cost of over 2.2 million birr over the
past six months have gone operational, the zonal Education Desk
disclosed.
The zonal education desk
said the public made financial, material and free labor contribution
to the construction of the educational facilities.
Over 80,840 people have
contributed free labor valued at over 400,000 birr.
The newly built schools
and additional classrooms enroll over 5,550 students, according to the
Desk.
Meanwhile, the Liben
Woreda Administration in Guji Zone of the Oromia Regional State
announced that various development projects would be carried out in
nine rural Kebeles of the woreda at a cost of 1.5 million birr.
Woreda Administrator,
Wolde Gebre said the projects include the construction of four health
posts, a veterinary clinic, three primary schools as well as women’s
capacity building activities, among others benefiting 10,000 people.
The Oromia Social
Rehabilitation and Development Fund provided the fund for the
execution of the projects, while the public is expected to render free
labor and material support.
Harar
SOS constructs 9.3 mln Br. school for orphans
The Harar SOS Children’s
Village said that it is supporting orphans and building a school with
an outlay of over 9.3 million birr in Harar town.
Village Head Abel
Kassahun said that the village is bringing up 289 children from Oromia,
Harari, Dire Dawa and other parts of Ethiopia that are orphaned by
various natural and manmade disasters.
The SOS village is
supporting the children to pursue their education from primary school
to college level, he added.
According to the village
head, 102 youths were brought up and received education with the
support of the village since its establishment in 1972 E.C.
Meanwhile, he said that
the village is building primary to pre-college level school that is
believed to enroll over 840 students.
Over 17 mln. birr investment projects licensed
The Harari State
Investment Office disclosed that it has issued investment licenses to
18 investors with a combined capital of more than 17 million birr over
the past six months.
Project Licensing,
Evaluation and Monitoring Coordinator with the office Abdulwasi Ahmed
said that the investors would engage in areas of mining and
construction, real estate development, industry and service rendering
sectors, among others. He said the investment projects are envisioned
to create permanent and casual job opportunities to over 300 people
upon going fully operational.
According to the
coordinator, 26 investment projects have so far gone operational with
an aggregate capital of over 76 million birr creating job
opportunities to 600 people over the past nine months.
Tigray
Office to provide over 29 mln. birr loans
The Abiy-Adi office with
the Dedebit Credit and Saving Institute in Tigray Regional State
announced that it has plans to provide over 29 million birr loan to
clients in the year 2004.
Office Head Haile Seyoum
said the credit service would be provided to some 22,700 permanent and
new clients living in various woredas of the zone.
Haile said farmers
embraced in various extension packages, community members engaged in
small trade and civil servants are expected to benefit from the
service.
The office had provided
over 10 million birr loans to over 10,900 people in three woredas and
Abiy-Adi town in 2003, he said, adding, over 23,700 clients have been
able to save over 13 million birr in the past years.
