Prime Minister Meles Zenawi stated that though Ethiopia’s mission in Somalia was more or less completed, the Ethiopian government would pursue the ‘remnants of the Jihadist elements.
“Ethiopian forces stay out of towns, but we will pursue the remnants of Jihadist elements. Remnants of the Shebab and Eritrean soldiers are fleeing to the coastal areas and we intend to pursue them so that they do not resurface,” the PM said.

Three banks under formation

Three new banks are under formation to join the financial sector in the coming months, sources from the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) disclosed.
According to information obtained, the three banks, namely Fenote Selam, Berhan and Oromia International Bank are in the process of establishment and are at the moment seeking buyers of shares in order to obtain the funds required to set up a bank capitalized at some 80 million birr.

Professor Richard Pankhurst is the son of Miss Sylvia Pankhurst, the great British suffragette and advocate of Ethiopia during and after Fascist Italy's occupation of Ethiopia. Professor Pankhurst taught for many years at Addis Ababa University and has written widely on Ethiopian history and culture. He is also the founder of Addis Ababa University's Institute of Ethiopian Studies and a founding member of the Axum Obelisk Return Committee and the Association for the Return of the MaqdalaEthiopian Treasures (AFROMET)

Branding Ethiopia

In May 2006 Capital interviewed Ato Anbess and Martin Mueller, directors of the Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp), one of the largest development programs in the world. Ecbp aims to transform the Ethiopian economy by focusing on four key areas - reform of the engineering faculties of universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reform, improving the quality of Ethiopian products and promoting the private sector.
After ecbp's first year Capital returned to find out what it had achieved so far and what it hopes to achieve.
Capital's Eskinder Michael met with Dr. Michael Nebelung, Yared Fekade and German Müller about their vision of 'branding Ethiopia', marketing the country and making it a key player in the international market, and with Ato Anbess and Martin Mueller to find out how they see Ethiopia's future.

Root Causes of Under-development in Ethiopia ?

The series of lectures in the academic year of 2006/7 has a bread and will continue on 23 January 2007 with a talk of H.E. Ato Arkebe Oqubay, States-Minister for Works and and Urban Development on "The Role of Cities as Centers for Economic Growth“.

In the meanwhile CAPITAL, media partner of the series, will come back on contributions of the first series. On 27 th June Dr. Negaso Gidada, former President of FDRE, spoke about “the root-causes of underdevelopment.”
