Spain to assist
Ethiopia with €7mln

The government of Spain would provide development assistance amounting seven million Euros to Ethiopia, senior Spanish government officials said.
State Minister for International Cooperation, Ms. Leire Pajin and State Minister for Political Affairs of Spain, Bernardino Leon Gross said the Spanish government has decided to open a new office in Ethiopia with in a month to facilitate development assistance.
The officials made the statement here on Tuesday while holding talks with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi at the United Nations Conference Center.
Ethiopia and Spain have signed a development and cultural cooperation agreement on the same day.
The officials said Ethiopia is one of the four countries that are given special attention by the Kingdom of Spain. (ENA)

Forensic investigation computerized

Activities are underway to put in place a system that enables a computerized and modern forensic investigation method in four states at a cost of 11 million birr by the Federal Police Commission.
Forensic Investigation Science Department Head with the Commission, Mulu Abraha and Disguised and Single Finger Print Unit head Chief Inspector Admassu Woresa said that finger print investigation service is currently underway manually in a long and tiresome method but the ongoing activities are geared towards providing efficient services through a modern electronic method.
They said the new computerized system enables people opting to travel abroad, engage in jobs and get issued certificates to leave their finger prints in a computer system and replaces the dilatory system of printing finger prints with paper and ink.
In the first phase of the project, Federal Police Commission and Amhara, Oromia, SNNP as well as Tigray states have been included and the modern system will enable to reduce the time taken to exchange messages from the federal police to states.
Procurement and installation of the necessary equipment have been finalized for the introduction of the new modern system and entry of the available finger prints into computers is underway.( ENA)


MfM to launch 11 million Birr development projects in N. Shoa

Menschen fur Menschen, an international humanitarian organization, would launch the construction of safe water projects and a school in Degem Woreda, North Showa Zone of the Oromia State, at a cost of 11 million Birr, the zonal disaster prevention and preparedness office said.
Office head, Abdisa Abuma told Ethiopian News Agency that sinking of nine water wells, development of 11 springs, and construction of a secondary school would be launched in different parts of the woreda soon.
The projects, which are to be coordinated by the zonal capacity building and safe water offices, are expected to benefit some 20,000 people, he added.
MfM is an international humanitarian organization established some 25 years ago by Dr. Karlheinz Bohm, now an honorary citizen of Ethiopia. (ENA)

New universities to be operational next month

The Ministry of Education said it has registered encouraging results in activities it carried out during the first half of the current budget year. Preparations have been finalized to make the new universities operational in the coming month.
In a statement he gave to journalists on Thursday, Education Minister, Sintayehu Woldemichael said the ministry has carried out encouraging results in building its executing capacity, teachers’ development, increasing number of schools and maintaining quality of education, among others.
Meanwhile, the new universities have finalized recruitment of human power and procurement of equipments to enroll students, he said, adding, except Semera University the remaining 12 universities would enroll students in the coming month.( ENA)


Agency conducts 34 research projects

Some 34 research projects conducted under Local Research Grant (LRG) program has been finalized, the Ethiopian Science and Technology Agency (ESTA) said.
Speaking at the 12th Cycle LRG workshop here on Thursday, Director General of ESTA, Dr, Zerihun Kebede said the program launched in 1985 E.C. has gone into its 15th cycle.
He said the government provided over 11.8 million Birr budget for the implementation of a total of 601 research projects in all the cycles so far.
The program has been consistently going and that a number of professionals and institutions have benefited from it, he said, adding in line with this, a research capacity building and widening the research base line seems to be successful. (ENA)
