Bringing heartfelt joy

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by social, verbal, and emotional difficulties. The centers for Disease Control and Prevention on May 4, 2007 released results of surveys which revealed that 300,000 children suffer from autism in the USA.
This figure means there are roughly 5.5 Autism diagnoses per 1000 school age children. Interestingly, boys were four times more likely to suffer from autism than girls.
Data on autism in Ethiopia is not available as the condition is subject to deep rooted misconception, superstition and widespread ignorance as to what causes autism. Public awareness of autism remains a challenge that is actually worse than the condition itself. One brave woman has made it her life’s task to reach out to autistic children.
“Joy-Center for Children with Autism and Related Developmental Disorders",
(J-CCARDD) is the first center of its kind in Ethiopia. The not-for-profit organization was established in May 2002 by the mother of an autistic child, with a dream to bring joy to autistic children and their loved ones by providing education, training, and rehabilitation in a safe and stimulating environment.
Zemi Yeus is (J-CCARDD) Ethiopia, Managing Director, founder and a teacher at this inspired endeavor..
Zemi spent some time with Capital’s Mina Yirga. Excerpts of the interview follow.

French Scholarship – and the new Ethiopian Millennium

Ethiopia has intrigued explorers, scholars, painters, bards and the itinerant wanderer since the mists of time. Our country is arguably the most written about nation in Africa next to Egypt. Weighty tomes have been laboriously compiled by Greeks, Romans, Portuguese, British, Italian, German and French writers in various languages.
Unfortunately, few of these works have bibliographies compiled for them. Professor Pankhurst in a previous article, shed light on this issue and gently reminded all historically minded Italians to consider publishing a Bibliography of works by Italians on Ethiopia.
This week, he illuminates the French contribution to Ethiopian studies and repeats his advice for the compilation of the works of eminent French-Ethiophiles into a Bibliography.
