Will power
Curiously enough, some people ask whenever they think that the status quo in their imaginary world is affected, “...is it possible to do this or that?” Naïve as these cluster of questions seem, someone benefits as long as the confusion lasts.
Whenever people shift from the groups’ value system to their own perception of things, there would occur a tendency that quickly classify them as strange, uncivilized or uneducated. In truth, it is frightening for one who used to live through one’s life appreciating the superior ego of that particular epoch, to witness suddenly the reverse or the down ward shift taking place.
Under the free economic system, some enlightened members of society were asking questions whenever some anomalies or malaise occurred, was this or that possible? Others who were on the other end of the spectrum would say, “...yes, it is possible;” the free economic system would not restrain that. In effect, they would say under the free economic system every one is free to do what one wills; porno, theft, violence, exploitation, etc.” forgetting the basic law of the land. So malaise became the rule of the day rather than the exception.
The gap in value systems and the gap in perceptions then would conflict with the more accepted concept of generation gap. The uneducated groups or the educated crooks become the vehicles and agents of the evil thinkers, and rules get started to be ignored.
Now, business-men who appeared stronger after the sure-tax was introduced recently were compelled to reassess their action against the Government’s intervention which was made in respect of the basic law of the land to safeguard the right of people to enjoy unhampered life under the free economic system. Likewise, when the Government came up with another stronger legal hand again to safeguard people’s lives that were abused by the authors of the new value system, who advocated freedom of everything under the new economic order to the extent of driving mechanically wrong vehicles over people and killing or wounding them and destroying their properties irresponsibly they started again to revisit their positions. The Government vowed not to go back on its measures until the new elements that used the new economic system selfishly to satisfy their narrow selfish ends learn the truth the bitter-way.
Will there be a third way for these new elements to advance their egoistic ends? For them, the fact of the matter seems to be even terrorism is a free exercise of peoples’ will under the free-economic system. What they advocate “wouldn’t it seem anarchy in the guise of capitalist order of life?” Is this a generation gap or a gap of thinking, perception, or value system?
The value system of this category of peoples is to love to see people suffer as a consequence of price hike every time a new thing happens. They are not the disciples of true leadership; they are truly mercenaries of evil. They are neither derivatives of the new economic system nor do they belong to the new generation.
I should not despair as some do to find true leaders among the Ethiopians. As long as language can describe it, there are erudite, wise, educated, civilized, determined, creative, critical and positive thinkers among the old and the new generations unless one is adamantly sure that the whole society is fizzling out. That is not possible either. The Ethiopians should be proud to find, formally educated or not, among themselves capable, farsighted, considerate, visionary and determined elements, who can honestly shoulder public responsibility or serve in public life, and true religious believers among the odds who can dedicate themselves for the love of their fellow compatriots, for the good of extra-territorial peoples, and for the improvement of their country’s development effort and economic self-sufficiency. If there is a discernible difference however, it would only be one that would result from wrong placement of manpower and material. The weak, the incapable, the corrupt, the misguiding and the opportunists taking public and social responsibilities and letting the Government face sharp challenges as a consequence of their feeble and not result oriented roles in public life.
Nonetheless, it is in the nature of democracy to see generation-gap closing tightly although gradually. But, democracy does not know the twisting gaps of value systems. The democratic value system respects the unhampered freedom of people to enjoy its fruits to the last in accordance to the land’s basic laws. But, thwarted and twisted or corrupted value system, if ever it could be called “that” has no place under the free economic system of this country; and people should not be misguided by any action which is not based on the basic laws of the land. The power of the will of a Government is greater than the power of the promoters of corrupted value system based on selfishness, criminality, greed and exploitation.
