Ministry eyes local consultants for major projects

The Ministry of Works and Urban Development (MWUD) is to launch a capacity building program that would enable the ministry to participate in major government projects, normally carried out by international consultants.
MWUD held a meeting on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at its premises with local consultants, representing their association as well as individual companies that are not part of the association, as well as members. The meeting aimed at the identification of obstacles that are holding them back from competing with international companies.

Akaki ground water at risk

The Akaki ground water plant is at risk after the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority had revamped its capacity by almost 30% to alleviate the severe shortage of water in the city.
The plant used to supply about 30,000m3 of water per day with a supply capacity for 30 years. Although its daily supply has been upgraded to 42,000m3, the life span of the plant is ending.

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), in the recently revised bill presented to parliament states that any manipulated import and export documents presented to the government for tax purposes would lead to severe punishment of up to 25 years imprisonment.

Hotels grumble over new service charge tax

Hotels are complaining over an increase in tax on the collectable service charge that has been imposed on them last week, that would require them to pay 15 percent more on service charges to the government.
A local hotel owner, whose name was held upon request, told Capital that according to the new system, an extra charge of the Value Added Tax (VAT) is imposed on the service charge payment, varying based on the labor union’s joint decision of hotels, which normally ranges from 5 to 10%.

Located in Kelly Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany, United States Africa Command, Africom, is one of six of the Defense Department’s regional military headquarters. According to its Public Affairs Office, Africom is currently a sub-unified command under the U.S. European Command. Under Africom, one command will consolidate military responsibility for all of Africa, excluding Egypt.
