Ethiopia ranked 169 in HDI
Sub-Saharan nations to lose out on $26 bln due to climate change

Ethiopia has been ranked 169th among 177 countries surveyed by the Human Development Index (HDI), according to the 2007/2008 Human Development Report (HDR) released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Iceland and Norway get first and second positions respectively as the most decent places to live in. Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden and Switzerland follow with the United States securing 12th place.

Explosion at CBE Merkato Branch

A bomb has exploded inside the building of a Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) branch, commonly known as Abakoran located behind the Grand Anwar Mosque on Friday afternoon, at around 2:30PM, damaging some of the building’s windows.
Abe Sano, President of the state owned CBE, told Capital that it is too early to specifically comment on the extent of damage, although it was clear that there were no human casualties.

NBE gold scandal brewing

The Federal High Court, First Criminal Bench, has given a 12 day period for pressing charges on businessmen suspected of involvement in the recent gold scandal that has hit the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE).
The court granted the investigation period for the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission, at a hearing held on Friday February 29, 2008.

In love with Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s ancient, intricate and unique history has drawn the arid interest of scholars from the earliest of times. The documented historical record of our country is extensive and Ethiopia is, along with ancient Egypt and Hellenic Greece, one of the few nations which has its history as a discipline of academia.
Contributing prolifically to this body of work since the late 60’s is Professor Haggai Erlich, a noted Israeli historian whose personal affection for Ethiopia has spurred him to author dozens of books and journals on Ethiopian Studies. Prof. Erlich is Professor Emiritus, Tel-Aviv University and a key collaborator in the Institute of Ethiopian Studies Encyclopedia Etiopica project.

Gibe on the third gear

The country’s largest hydropower production project has been officially commenced at the end of January aiming to boost the nation’s current electric production two fold when completed in eight years.
Gibe III project is to generate a staggering 1870 MW of electric power and is also expected to earn 300 million euros annually. When completed Gibe would enter the East African power pool, where it would supply electric power for the Southern and Eastern African regions, mainly Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
