Creative Africa launches in Accra

Creative Africa, a cultural initiative, launched in Accra, Ghana, as part of UNCTAD XII, 20-25 April 2008, after various meetings and discussions with different levels of delegations and the creative community, bringing legendary and contemporary African artists together, including musicians, painters and fashion designers.
Creative Africa is believed to play a significant role in the cultural and overall development of African communities, enabling them to be the beneficiaries of the global creative economy.

Public hospitals: a.m. state, p.m. private

Among ongoing efforts to create favorable conditions for medical doctors and to combat the high percentage of them fleeing overseas, the Ministry of Health is soon to introduce a new system that allows medical doctors to use state owned hospitals to treat patients privately, during part time hours, Capital learned.
The new directive allows 60% of profits to go to doctors, who are expected to pay support staff, and the balance to the hospital, to cover operational and other costs.

Castel Winery poised to sow vineyard

Groupe Castel is about to plant its first grapes, on a 125 hectares of land located in Zeway, 160 Km south east of Addis Ababa, in Oromia region.
The total land secured through lease from the Ethiopian Fruit Development Enterprise (EFDA) is 493 hectares and was valued at 7.1 million birr by Ernst & Young in 2001. The land was under the administration the EFDA, a government institution.

Opposition MPs request Anti Corruption to ‘hunt hawks not small birds’

The Federal Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (FEACC) nine month report that indicates over 86% conviction rate and 87.4% budget use, was found to be ridiculous by Whip Members of Parliament who represent various Opposition Parties. The Commission’s report shows its accomplishments starting from July 2007 to April 8, 2008.

In combat with malnutrition

The recent evidence-based report by The Lancet has awakened the Ethiopian government for immediate action and intervention against one of the world’s biggest killers – malnutrition, as in February the country launched the first ever National Nutrition Strategy (NNS).
Founded in 1823, the journal is acclaimed to be the world’s leading independent medical journal with its coverage international in focus and extending to all aspects of human health.

An Early Ethiopian Map

 
Maps, dear reader, were, as you know, rare all over the world in former times -including Ethiopia.
There was, however, one old-time Ethiopian map - or more exactly a diagramatic sketch of one, with which we are concerned today. At least five variations of it are known to the present writer. They are included in five different 18th century Ethiopian manuscripts - works of the later Gondarine period as historians call it.
