Off at any time EEPCo, unscheduled power shedding

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has announced that the power rationing will be increased from the current four days in two weeks to five days in two weeks duration.
The announcement also disclosed that the interruptions may occur beyond the specified shift days until the current power shortage is solved.

Meles, business community to tackle economic situation

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is going to meet with the business community on Monday May 12, 2008 at his office to discuss on current issues related to the economy.
The discussion, organized by the Ethiopian Chambers of Commerce and Sectoral Association (ECCSA) would focus on questions that are to be raised from the business community about the current economic situation.

New Press Law tabled in Parliament

The draft press law, disputed on whether or not it discourages press freedom, was tabled to the House of Peoples’ Representatives on Thursday May 8, 2008. Backed by Opposition Party, United Ethiopian Democratic Party (UEDP-Medhin), the bill was sent to the Information and Cultural Affairs standing committee. The bill is expected to be back for endorsement by the House within the next twenty one days after the standing committee organizes public hearings.

Leather institutes collaborate

The Ethiopian Leather and Leather Products Technology Institute (LLPTI) together with an institute from England; Northampton Leather Manufacturing Institute (NLMI), are to launch degree and post graduate programs. The two institutes have also agreed to restructure LLPTI’s existing management assisted by NLMI.
According to the agreement NLMI will supply capable instructors and curriculums necessary for enhancing the education provided on leather and its products.

On clearing a vital corridor

The bustling Red Sea port of Djibouti as well as two customs posts on the Ethio-Djibouti border were, on May 5 and 6th 2008, the destination of a workshop on Trade Facilitation and Study Tour, organized by the UNECA and complementing a UN Development account project “the interregional partnership for promoting trade as an engine of growth through knowledge management and information communication technologies.”

A melting pot turns 60

Ambassador Yaccov Amitai was born in Kibbutz Yiftah, Israel, in 1947. He has a B.A. Degree in History of the Middle East and Political Science, Hebrew University, Jerusalem (1972) as well as an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies, Tel-Aviv University (1975). He has served in various positions within the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and has been Ambassador of Israel to Kenya, with accreditation also for Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius and the Seychelles, and Permanent Representative to UNEP and HABITAT.

Boosting enduring ties with Ethiopia

This is not his first time to be in Ethiopia as he was based here between 1988 - 1989, as technical advisor at the then European Delegation, mainly responsible for regional issues involving Ethiopian Airlines, Ethio- Djibouti Railway and others.
Very much Italian in name, but “ German by blood and European by heart,” he returned to Addis Ababa on January 14th of this year, with his new title as Head of Delegation European Union to Ethiopia and Djibouti, and was accredited in just 24 hrs, which he views as ‘a record’.

An Early Ethiopian Map

 
Maps, dear reader, were, as you know, rare all over the world in former times -including Ethiopia.
There was, however, one old-time Ethiopian map - or more exactly a diagramatic sketch of one, with which we are concerned today. At least five variations of it are known to the present writer. They are included in five different 18th century Ethiopian manuscripts - works of the later Gondarine period as historians call it.
