With a population of more than four million, Addis Ababa is not only the political capital but also the economic and social nerve-center of Ethiopia. Founded by Emperor Menelik in 1887, this big, sprawling, hospitable city still bears the stamp of his exuberant personality. More than 21,000 hectares in area, Addis Ababa is considered very difficult to run.
Kuma Demeksa and Kefiyalew Azeze have been elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively for the Addis Ababa City Council on Tuesday May 20, 2008 becoming the first elected Mayor since the new Addis Ababa Charter was launched five years back.

Ministry bans
importation of vehicles of over 5 years

The Ministry of Transport and Communications is considering to pass a directive that would prohibit second-hand vehicles imported to the country that are more than five years old.
Berhanu Amsalu, public relations head of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, told Capital that the directive that would likely be put in to effect the coming July, is necessary for effective usage of fuel as well as restricting pollution.

Financial shortage delays, condo projects

Because of financial constraints and rising prices of construction materials, the Addis Ababa Housing Development Agency (AAHDA) has decided not to start the construction work on 38,000 condominiums, until the end of this year.
According to Tesdale Mamo, general manager of AAHDA, the finance shortage occured because funds expected from the city finance bureau were not available in time.

Bulcha sees Meles adopt ‘no nuclear science’ strategy

Targeting to bring down ever worsening inflation that is shooting up grain prices in local markets, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi announced that 1.5 million quintals of imported wheat will arrive in Ethiopia in the next six weeks, which is according to MP Bulcha Demkisa, his proposal that was turned down last March.
