Refugees increase in Somali region; John Holmes

After a three day visit to the Somali and SNNPR regions, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes explained at a Hilton Hotel press conference with international and local media on September 3, 2008, that many Ethiopians affected by drought have come to Lafa'isa refugee screening center in Somali region, set up to receive refugees from Somalia proper.

Ethiopian nets over half billion ETB

Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) registered 9.2 billion birr of operating revenue during the 2007/2008 fiscal year, of which 504 million birr is a net profit; 20 million birr over what it registered during the fiscal year's first three quarters, Capital learnt.
Ethiopian announced it generated 6.6 billion birr operating revenue during the first nine months of the fiscal year 2007/2008 which is 29% up from last year, and a net profit of 484 million birr.

Merkato bomb causes carnage

A video parlour located around Amede Gebeya in the heart of Merkato, one of Africa’s largest markets, was target of a powerful bomb that destroyed the parlour, leaving eight dead and 24 injured.
According to eyewitnesses, four people expired at the scene of the explosion and one person died en-route to St. Pauls Hospital.
From the 24 injured people some are in critical condition, raising fears of a higher death toll.

Ethiopian post office to sign deal with int’l carriers

As part of a reform program, the Ethiopian Postal Service (EPS) office is set to sign agreements with international carriers, with the view of boosting the postal services, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) disclosed.
Junedi Sado, Minister of Transport and Communication told journalists on September 1, 2008 that the Postal Service, has been undergoing the implementation phase of a Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Civil Service Agency for the last nine months.

Intercontinental Addis, a new 5-star hotel that is set to open this month September, 2008, will add another hotel of such category from the currently existing two in the country. Owned by Simachew Kebede, an Ethiopian national, who has so far invested 320 million birr in the first phase, ambitious project, had to work hard alongside Fisseha Asres to maske this a reality. .

Ethiopia is growing fast, but inflation is biting

Double-digit growth has its downsides, in the form of inflation of 40%-plus and foreign currency reserves that cover no more than six weeks of imports.
Since 2004 the Ethiopian economy has enjoyed double-digit growth rates, but this success has come at the cost of rapid inflation and a steep fall in foreign currency reserves. Surging coffee prices have played a major role in spurring accelerated growth, while inflation is being largely driven by the steep rise in world food and oil prices.
