Failure of the mobile telephone network, which occurred on the early mornings of Friday February 15t , at 2:00am, created havoc on various activities including banking activities in parts of Addis Ababa. The interruption occurred after 80 network towers failed to respond.
The failure that persisted until 10:30am occurred while engineers of Ethio Telecom were upgrading the system of the main mobile telephone network controlling station at mid night.
According to Abdurahim Ahmed, Public Relations head of Ethio Telecom, several parts of the city were affected by the network failure. Abdurahim further stated that the problem was resolved late in the morning. However, mobile users Capital talked to said that the network problem was not fully resolved the whole day of Friday in various areas, and they were not able to use the services without interruption.
According to Abdurahim, the central part of the city had especially been affected. He said the areas disturbed includes places around the National Palace, Legehar, Piazza, Black Lion Hospital, Saris and Akaki.
Capital also learned that parts of the Bole area had been cut off from the network until midday. The problem also affected institutions like banks that mainly use machine-to-machine systems for data transfer. “The failure affected such institutions because they use SIM cards,” Abdurahim added.
During the aforementioned day, customers were unable to transact their day to day businesses, especially in relation with banks, due to the system failure.
