Tsehay Zewde Scholarship Fund awarded for the second time 70 female students with visual impairment on Monday April 10, 2012 at the Addis Ababa University President’s Office.

The scholarship fund that started awarding students in December last year focused on Masters students with a minimum of 3.0 GPA. The event was possible with the collaboration of Aster Zewde, who is the sister of Tsehay Zewde, along with the Addis Ababa University’s Presidents Office, Procurement Office and Gender Studies Office.
Aster Zewde also presented digital recorders to the scholarship awardees who previously used an analog recording device. “I was very sad when I saw them using the old recorders because it didn’t record clearly and they had to bend their necks down to listen to it because it didn’t have an earphone,” stated Aster Zewde. The digital recorders will enable the students to record for a longer duration and it comes with an earphone and rechargeable battery.
Admasu Tsegaye, President of the Addis Ababa University, who was present at the ceremony, stated that it is a great donation for the students.  “There are a lot of materials that we as a higher education institute don’t have as we should especially for those with disability, that is why this donation is a very crucial one,” he stated.
The students present at the event were very touched and gave their heartfelt thanks to Aster. “What she has done will help us in ways you can’t imagine. It is truly the best support we could ever get,” stated one student. She also stated that all of them will work hard and hopes to give the kind of support they have gotten to others in the future.
It was also stated at the event by the different collaborators that the university will need to work harder in providing adequate materials to students to help them do better in their studies.
The Tsehay Zewde Scholarship Fund is a memorial award in the name of the late Tsehay who passed away 16 years ago. Her family is running the scholarship fund. Last year in December when it first started, it awarded 100 female students with visual impairment scholarships worth 240,000 birr; 84 from the undergraduate and 16 from the post graduate.
