Ethiopian National team head coach Webetu Abate resigned

Wubetu Abate’s time as Ethiopian national team Head Coach came to an end just less than three months into the two year contract extension. Frontrunner for the replacement Gebremedin Haile rumored to have declined EFF’s request, the hot seat is likely to stay vacant for the coming months.
Qualification to African Cup of Nations 2021 and Chan 2022 followed by the unbelievable 2-0 Nations Cup qualification group stage victory over Egypt, EFF handed Webetu a two year contract extension that goes along the lucrative 500.000 Birr monthly salary.
The 45-year-old gaffer was unveiled as the Walia Ibex coach in September 2020 following the departure of Abraham Mebratu after the expiry of his contract.
EFF revealed that e development in a statement released Friday night, indicating they had accepted the veteran gaffer’s decision reaching for a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. .
Wubetu, a former player has managed several clubs in Ethiopia, including Adama City, Ethiopian Coffee, Dedebit, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Hawassa City, Fasil Kenema, and Sebeta Town FC.
He is remembered for guiding Ethiopia Bunna to their first-ever Ethiopian Premier League title in 2011, beating cross-city rivals St George.
He also had a successful stint at Sudanese side Al Ahly Shendi, where he guided the team to a third-place finish and participation in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Walia Antelopes are sitting at the bottom in Group D of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with three points from four matches. Ethiopia hosts Malawi for the next qualification match against Malawi on the 16th June while the group qualification final showdown against Egypt takes place in Cairo on 8th of September 2023.
