In a letter issued on 30 September 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has declared a “persona non grata” for seven individuals who are working for UN humanitarian agencies in Ethiopia. As the letter explains, the decision was made as result of the individuals meddling in the internal affairs of the country.
The letter addressed each of the 7 individuals to leave the country with in the 72 hours which started from the late afternoon of Thursday September 30.
The 7 individuals listed on the letter includes five members of the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA, including senior leaders, were being ordered out of the country, as well as the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF Representative, and a team leader from the UN human rights office, OHCHR, Adele Khodr, UNICEF Representative in Ethiopia, Sonny Onyegbula, Monitoring, Reporting and Advocacy Team Leader : United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kwesi Sansculotte, Peace and Development Advisor: UNOCHA, Saeed Mohamoud Hersi: Deputy Head of Office: Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ethiopia, Grant Leaity, Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator: Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ethiopia, Ghada Eltahir Mudawi: Acting Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator: Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ethiopia, Marcy Vigoda, Head of office: Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ethiopia.
A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about its decision on UN staffers released on Friday evening reads “In connection to the current situation in the Northern part of Ethiopia, we had sadly observed that some UN staff have failed to fulfill their mission independently and impartially in accordance with the abovementioned MoU and the relevant principles of the UN. These serious violations have been brought to the attention of the relevant UN high officials and other international partners on multiple occasions, but to no avail. Despite these communications of concern, the grave violations persisted. As such, as a measure of last resort, the Government of Ethiopia had to ask some officials of UN agencies to leave the country.”
The statement further reads “therefore, in order to avoid confusion regarding the measure taken by the Government, we wish to highlight some of the following breaches: which these individuals have committed in violation of their professional code of conduct: diversion of humanitarian assistance to the TPLF; violating agreed-upon security arrangements; transferring communication equipment to be used by the TPLF; continued reticence in demanding the return of more than 400 trucks commandeered by the TPLF for military mobilization and for the transportation of its forces since July 2021; and dissemination of misinformation and politicization of humanitarian assistance. Ethiopia is deeply disappointed by the fact that some countries are urging the United Nations Security Council to consider this matter. This is a blatant violation of Ethiopia’s sovereign prerogative on matters of national security. We are confident the Security Council will reject this undue politicization of humanitarian assistance.”
After the decision, United Nations general secretary Antonio Guterres in a statement said “I was shocked by the decision of the government of Ethiopia which has declared seven UN officials, including senior UN humanitarian officials, as persona non grata.”
“All UN humanitarian operations are guided by the core principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence. In Ethiopia, the UN is delivering lifesaving aid including food, medicine, water, and sanitation supplies to people in desperate need. I have full confidence in the UN staffs that are in Ethiopia doing this work,” said the secretary.
“We strongly condemn Ethiopia’s decision to expel seven UN officials whose work is critical to humanitarian relief, the United states calls for this decision to be reversed and will not hesitate to respond decisively,” tweeted United States State Secretary, Antony Blinken.

Ethio Telecom concludes first round network expansion
Ethio telecom has completed its first round of advanced 4G LTE network expansion in over 16 regions over the country, however Tigray has been left back due to the situation, announced the CEO.
In its latest expansion, Ethio telecom upgraded the West West region, launching the advanced 4G LTE service on September 30, 2021 in an event held in Assosa at Semhal Hotel. In the West West Region, specifically Assosa, Bambasi, and Gilgel Beles towns including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam where high mobile data traffic has been observed were the beneficiaries of the network expansion.
As part of its competitive strategy for the coming telecom competition on February 22, 2021 Ethio telecom had announced its first 4G LTE Advanced network expansion in the south eastern region for six towns and ever since in the last 8 months Ethio telecom has reached 16 regions and 92 towns where there is high mobile data traffic and surge in demand.

“The service covers areas with a high demand for speedy internet,” emphasized Frehiwot Tamru, CEO of Ethio telecom. “The network expansions will enable and empower customers to digitize their services, increase productivity and improve their experience,” Frehiwot stated.
Despite the plan being to reach 106 towns, as the CEO said due to the current situation in the country the first round has stopped on 92, yet about 71 new 4G LTE advanced network infrastructures would be introduced to improve network availability as the data traffic growth and demand from customers for the 4G/LTE have been increasing. “Our company is immensely working on phase -II network upgrade and expansion in association with the ever-growing data demands,” said the CEO
LTE Advanced mobile service is one of the latest mobile technologies providing reliable connections enriching customers’ experience with exceptional speed to download or upload large-sized data, high-definition (HD) multimedia, live streaming and video conferencing in real-time.
ZTE, Huawei, and Ericsson has participated in the expansion of the network as strategic partners of Ethio telecom.
Ethio telecom which is preparing for the coming competition has also for its partial privatization floated expression of interest.
Through it all, Ethio-Telecom has been working hard to become a competent and preferred telecom service provider in the fast and dynamic telecom market to meet the growing demand for telecom services. Currently there are about 54 million customers of Ethio telecom, it has also planned to increase its total subscribers by 14% to 64 million customers while also planning to reach Data and Internet users by 16.2% to 28.5million users.
Horticulture farms to benefit from new green waste schemes
The Ethiopian Horticulture Producers Exporters Association (EHPEA) announces that it is going to introduce two new green waste management schemes at member farms.
On the conference and field visit the association organized on the deliberation of used water treatment technology that is carried out at horticulture farms, EHPEA stated that it has finalized to introduce energy production technologies under the green waste management scheme.
Thomas Teklesilassie, Waste Management Manager at EHPEA, said that the association has been conducting the pilot on energy production technologies under the green waste management.
He said that it is now ready for full implementation on farms by adding that one farm has already agreed for the operation.
Mikiyas Bekele, Training Department Head at EHPEA, said that more farms are expected to be included on the scheme.
Biochar/briquette technology and biogas production are the two new schemes that will be fully applied on the ground.
On his presentation, Thomas said that Biochar/briquette technology included water filtration, fertilizer production and energy. Under the biogas production green waste management, energy and fertilizer would be generated.
So far in the green waste management scheme EHPEA has adopted technologies to ensure environmentally friendly production on the horticulture development, which is booming on the Ethiopian economy and become one of the top three hard currency source of the country.
“Compositing technology and vermin-composition technology has been put in place for the past several years,” the Waste Management Manager explained.
Through compositing technology almost all farms are using it that allows them to change the green waste to compost and jointly with the vermin-composition technology farms are able to save 33 percent of their fertilizer cost on the green waste management.
The coming two schemes are also expected to be another benefit for farms besides insuring the waste management.
EHPEA has said that on the sued water treatment scheme it has registered massive success at farms that enable to protect the environment and the community in the farm areas.
Tewodros Zewdie, Head of EHPEA, said that nutrients, impurities and even other unnecessary substances must be removed before used water is returned to rivers, streams and other waterways, “That is why we have been working relentlessly to put in place treatment plants in the farms.”
“We are pleased to present EHPEA’s engagement on addressing used water and solid or green waste treatment approaches to solve the challenges and build a sustainable horticulture industry that takes into consideration the concerns of all our stakeholders and partners,” Tewodros added.
He said that the association has taken bold steps in the last couple of years to address the challenges of used water.
One of the major steps the association takes is that it formed an exclusive department to follow the waste disposal and management.
“By deploying used water treatment technologies, we helped our members to prevent 58.5 million meter cubes of polluted water from flooding communities or entering local waterways,” the head of EHPEA said.
Currently, 31 used water treatment plants have been instilled that allows farms to reuse 53 million meter cube of water on their operation.
Capacity building, training and other supports is also provided by the association for member farms.
The waste management has been also included as one of the criteria and parameters to the code of practice for the floriculture industry.
Besides the 31 plants, Thomas says that 10 new farms are undertaking the construction of treatment plants that will increase the total number and more others expected to get on the scheme.
He said that so far over 700 hectare of land is under used water treatment plant.
Waste management is one of the standards that are not only resided for horticulture sector but others.
Mikiyas said that there are also international markets that put it as a precondition due to that farms and exporters shall meet the requirement on their effort for waste management that initially have investment costs but its maintenance cost is minimal.
CASINO & CRONY CAPITALISM
Capitalism as it is theoretically construed and formally thought in the institutions of learning (and elsewhere) is and has always been different from its real life manifestations. As we enter its twilight zone (resource shortages, ecological limits, etc.) the discrepancy is becoming more and more pronounced. In the West where capitalism had developed to maturity, the change looks dramatic, the dysfunctionality frightening! In the early 21st century, capitalism seems to have morphed into crony and casino capitalism. Crony capitalism is the exclusive domain of the connected wealthy, while aspects of casino capitalism is availed to the unsuspecting gullible sheeple. In the words of a Chinese farmer, ‘it is easy to make money from the stock market than from farming.’ The operating word here is ‘easy’, not ‘a lot’, which would have been somewhat understandable!
By crony capitalism, we mean an accumulation process whereby the rigor and vagaries of the market is suspended in favor of pre-arranged operating environment (including capital, land/other resources, even labor) favorably disposed to pre-selected market operators. This version of capitalism is openly facilitated by the powerful ‘deep states’ within the strong, as well as not so strong states. We recall; a ‘deep state’ is a state that is effectively run by the military-intelligence-industrial-banking-media complex, always operating behind the façade of a democratically elected administration. In countries where the public/state sector is the lion’s share of GDP, the phenomenon is phenomenal (OECD)! For instance, the ‘killing industry’, euphemistically called the ‘defense industry’, is now one of the mainstay of deep state economies, large and small. The trickle down effects of such massive state expenditures should not be undermined, particularly their pacifying role in subduing the sheeple’s opposition to the war industry.
By casino capitalism, we mean the finely tuned shearing/slaughtering machine that is put in place, to be used from time to time, (by dominant interests) on the gullible sheeple. Casino capitalism facilitates credit propelled consumption/investments, ranging from the day-to-day purchases of ordinary/unnecessary stuff to the majors, namely, real estate and stocks, as in stock markets. The current global economic growth model is, to a large extent, predicated on these pillars of existing capitalism, or what we call the triple C’s-Crony & Casino Capitalism. We advise; this unsustainable infatuation with money matters will have long term consequences, not always positive or favorable to the gullible global sheeple. China today has more stock market traders (day traders) than communist party members! About a third of these traders (total day traders number about a hundred million strong) pack less formal knowledge than a high school graduate. Our prayers with them! We repeat; the sheeple seems to be eager and ready to commit financial/economic suicide because of ephemeral wealth dangled in front of it by cunning manipulators, who only breath greed! At times the sheeple, not only gets sheared, but can also get slaughtered, as in the case of Greece. Pensions can vanish into the ether, savings can be confiscated, (Cyprus, and coming to places near you) and wages can plummet or even disappear all together (structural unemployment) as in many places around the world, Greece, Ukraine and a lot of places here on our continent!
When various machinations, (like the above fail), the state, on behalf of entrenched interests aggressively intervenes to save CCC. Negative interest rates, quantitative easing, stratosphere leveraging that fuel esoteric ‘financial products’, such as derivatives, etc., are all schemes to salvage the decaying order! We believe, the system is now broken and there won’t be much time left before we start seeing heightened chaos all over! Too big to fail institutions might not be saved, not because of undesirability, on the part of the power that be, but because they are too big to bail! So far none of those who have committed financial crimes that destroyed people’s lives and countries (Greece, etc.) have gone to prisons, as they are too big to jail. At this late our, the efforts of the status quo seems to be only akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic! Financial cannibalism is how one journalist explained the underlying dynamic of current finance capital. ‘The modern banking system of the last few centuries has been based on lending to borrowers who do something productive with the capital — open a mine, start a factory, start a ranch, drill an oil well. But this whole equation becomes unstuck when — because of a finite resource-constrained planet — there’s nowhere productive to invest it anymore. That’s when finance capital becomes cannibalistic, as it has over the last few decades. That’s why the Greeks, for example, cannot grow themselves out of the debt pit — there’s no growth to be had.’ Arshad Ali.
As we have been saying ad infinitum, the world system that has been around for over half a millennium is in deep crisis and probably has exhausted itself, completely! On the other hand, there seems to be no serious effort, on the part of the status quo, to rethink everything from scratch. Tinkering around the edges is what the ruling elites think will solve the protracted problems of our time. We beg to differ! Blind intransigence, we believe, is not only irrational, but is actually suicidal! From climate change to resource shortages to the increased difficulty of managing complex systems built over time, to the unfolding social chaos; humanity faces formidable challenges, and the Ostrich strategy of burying ones head in the sand cannot solve these humongous problems. If we are not willing to look at our current situation objectively and differently, with a view to changing them profoundly, then we might as well kiss life (as we know it) good-bye. Time is of the essence!
