Eritrea: Farmers Day Observance in Southern Region

Farmers Day was observed in Adi-Mengonti, Southern Region, featuring the introduction of hybrid corn seeds to farmers. The event was attended by 33 farmers and 12 agricultural experts.

Mr. FesehayeTesfatsion, a seed development expert at the Ministry of Agriculture branch in Mendefera sub-zone, stated that the Ministry is working to enhance production and productivity through the development of improved seeds and by increasing farmers’ awareness. He also noted that various types of improved seeds produced by the Halhale Agricultural Research Institute have been tested as a pilot project on 4 hectares in five administrative areas in the sub-zone.

Expressing satisfaction with producing hybrid corn seeds for the first time in the country, Mr. Neguse Abraha, a researcher at the Halhale Agricultural Research Institute, said they have identified improved corn seeds capable of yielding between 60 and 80 quintals per hectare. He also urged farmers to take advantage of the improved seeds.

Mr. KiflemariamAndebrhan, seed development expert at the Ministry of Agriculture branch in the region, reported that theoretical and practical training has been provided to both farmers and experts, and improved seeds have been distributed to 20 farmers in the Amni-Haili, Dubarwa, and Mendefera sub-zones.

First Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus S.Lukashevich receives copies of the Credentials of the Ambassadors of Algeria, Burundi, Kuwait and Mauritania

On October 30, 2024 the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergey Lukashevich, received copies of the Credentials of the Ambassadors of Algeria, Burundi, Kuwait and Mauritania. 

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Algeria to the Republic of Belarus (non-resident), Boumediene Gennad, the parties noted with satisfaction the intensification of bilateral political dialogue and trade and economic cooperation in 2024. The sides confirmed mutual interest in holding the first meeting of the Joint Belarusian-Algerian Intergovernmental Commission and discussed the schedule of visits for the near future.

With the Ambassador of Burundi to the Republic of Belarus (non-resident), Joseph Nkurunziza, the parties discussed the ways of expanding cooperation between Belarus and Burundi in political, trade, economic, humanitarian and other spheres and interaction on international platforms, as well as the expansion of the legal framework of bilateral relations. 

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Kuwait to the Republic of Belarus (non-resident), Rashed Hammad Al-Advani, the sides considered the state and development of bilateral political, economic and investment cooperation, as well as prospects for implementing joint projects in the humanitarian sphere. The interlocutors confirmed readiness to continue mutually respectful dialogue and active cooperation between the Foreign Ministries.

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Mauritania to the Republic of Belarus (non-resident), Mohamed Deman Hamar, the parties noted the necessity to expand bilateral interaction, maintain active dialogue on multilateral platforms and between Foreign Ministries, as well as to develop the legal framework of cooperation.

World Tourism Day Observance in Keren

World Tourism Day was observed in Keren, Anseba region, on 26 September under the theme “Tourism and Peace.”

The event was attended by Ms. Askalu Menkorios, Minister of Tourism, Ambassador Abdella Musa, Governor of Anseba Region, religious leaders, as well as owners of tourism service-providing institutions.

Mr. Salim Ali Salim, Director General of Tourism in the region, underlined that tourism and peace are inseparable concepts, noting that a society that enjoys peace has a comparative advantage in developing the tourism sector.

Ms. Askalu Menkorios, emphasizing that peace is fundamental for tourism development, said that organizing this program in a peaceful atmosphere is of great significance.

Ambassador Abdella, in his remarks, commended the organizers of the photo exhibition showcasing the tourism resources of the region. He also called for strengthened efforts to identify and promote the region’s heritage and tourism resources.

World Tourism Day, celebrated on 27 September, was observed for the 29th time at the national level.

Cabinet Secretary Dr. Barasa Engages Health Committee Ahead of Social Health Authority (SHA) Launch

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, met with the National Assembly Committee for Health ahead of the Social Health Authority (SHA) launch on 1st October 2024.

The CS reassured members that the Ministry has taken all necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition and effective rollout of services. Dr. Barasa highlighted key milestones, including the passage of relevant laws, the development of the benefits package, and the establishment of a comprehensive digital platform.

She acknowledged the committee’s input and the National Assembly’s support throughout the process. She urged members to continue backing the SHA implementation, emphasizing its importance in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare for all.
