African Association of Energy Journalists and Publishers (AJERAP) joins African Energy Week 2024 as media partner

0

The African Association of Energy Journalists and Publishers, AJERAP, (https://AJERAP.org/) with members drawn from 54 African nations, has joined the African Energy Week 2024 as media partner.

According to AJERAP, the objectives of the AEW align with the interest of the association, which is to “To promote accurate reportage and analysis of the energy and related sectors from an African perspective.”

The association said for too long, the energy narratives of Africa were driven mainly by stakeholders outside the continent, a dangerous development that exposed Africa’s energy narratives to distortions and misrepresentations.

AJERAP (https://AJERAP.org/) noted that since 2021, the intervention of the African Energy Chamber, through the instrumentality of the AEW, an annual event, has created the platform for African energy leaders, global investors and executives from across the public and private sector to experience intense dialogue on the present and future of the African energy industry.

The association, which headquarters is based in Banjul, The Gambia, said it would continue to endorse and support the AEW for at least a reason. AEW plays a pivotal role towards making energy poverty history by 2030 through hosting panel discussions, investor forums, industry summits and one-on-one meeting opportunities, signing deals and driving the discussions to reshape the trajectory of the continent’s energy development.

Partnership for Development

In its statement – Partnership for Development – AJERAP (https://AJERAP.org/) expressed delight in the massive support other stakeholders have given towards the success of the 2024 outing, adding “Indeed with lined up of impactful programmes and interest expressed by important speakers, attendees and exhibitors, the 2024 AEW is a must-attend event.”

The event has Republic of South Africa (Ministry of Mineral Resources&Energy) as the host government also has African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank, African Petroleum Producers Organisation, APPO, Petroleum Directorate of Sierra Leone, International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, ROSCONGRESS, Energio Alliance, Wood Mackenzie, Rystad Energy, S&P Global Commodity Insights, Oando Clean Energy, TGS, Sonedi, AGL Africa Global Logistics, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, African Women Business Energy Network, World Nuclear Association, The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance, Africa Energy Partners, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists and World LPG Association and others as partners.

At the forefront of the African energy industry, AEW promotes the role Africa plays in global energy matters, centered on African-led dialogue and decision making. Covering the entire energy sector and value chain, AEW represents the only conference on the continent representative of the entire sector.

“Instead of dwelling on the challenges hindering development, AEW focuses on integration and collaboration to reverse Africa’s resource curse and support energy explorers and producers across the continent. When we support upstream, midstream and downstream projects, we support jobs, we create growth, we promote gender equality, and we drive innovation that brings solutions for our future.

“Recognizing that the energy transition is shaping the global dialogue, AEW promotes the African position on the future of Africa’s energy sector. By advocating personal responsibility, free markets, individual liberty and an enabling environment for investors, AEW ensures that Africa’s oil and natural gas industry and Africans stand to benefit, rather than continuing a reliance on foreign aid and assistance.”

Green Climate Fund approves $151 million for African Development Bank’s climate resilience programme in the Horn of Africa

0

The Green Climate Fund (https://apo-opa.co/3MuvYC5) has approved $151 million in financing for a major resilience programme supported by the African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) to address climate vulnerability in the Horn of Africa.

The approval was granted at the Fund’s 39th Board meeting and comprises a $90.7 million grant and a $60.3 million loan. The financing will support the Bank Group’s “Building Climate Resilience for Food and Livelihoods in the Horn of Africa programme,” benefitting 4.6 million people across Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The Horn of Africa is most susceptible to climate-related risks, such as erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and increasingly frequent droughts and floods. These conditions have exacerbated socioeconomic challenges and threatened the livelihoods of agro-pastoral communities reliant on rain-fed agriculture. Climate change has led to increased livestock, crop and human diseases, and land degradation, reducing productivity.

Dr. Martin Fregene, the Bank’s Director for Agriculture and Agro-Industry, said the Bank is commitment to building climate resilience. “The mobilisation of the Green Climate Fund support shows the continued commitment of the African Development Bank Group to scale up climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture systems in the Horn of Africa, thereby improving food security in one of the most vulnerable regions of the planet.”

“These resources will further help consolidate the Feed Africa Strategy and complement the Country Food and Agriculture Delivery Compacts presented at the Dakar 2 Feed Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience Summit. This will support the reduction of poverty and food insecurity while contributing to accelerated sustainable economic growth in the region,” Fregene added.

The new financing will support community-driven and gender-balanced resilience solutions. These include sustainable land management practices, access to climate-smart technologies and best practices, renewable energy, capacity-building for cooperatives, agribusiness and micro, small and medium enterprises, credit and climate services, early warning, and index insurance.

Dr Anthony Nyong, the Bank’s Director for Climate Change and Green Growth, said, “The Bank has had a long-standing commitment to action on climate change and is committed to ensuring that we streamline low-carbon and climate-resilient economic development in all key sectors of our work.” He noted that the new resources will bolster the Bank’s efforts to mitigate climate change impacts and build resilience, particularly in agrarian communities.

Beyond community benefits, the Green Climate Fund financing will contribute to significant carbon emission reduction, potentially sequestering 14.1 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over the project’s 25-year lifetime – equivalent to lifetime emissions of 600,000 cars.

The African Development Bank will administer the new financing and monitor the programme, which will begin in the first quarter of 2025. The five target countries, through their respective ministries responsible for finance and agriculture, will implement it over six years with the project interventions expected to benefit targeted communities for 25 years.
