Ethiopia finished second behind hosts USA in the medal table, with four gold medals in their total haul of 10 podium finishes. They won both marathon events with Gotytom Gebreslase triumphing in the women’s 42.2km distance, and Tamirat Tola claiming the men’s marathon. Mosinet Geremew also won marathon silver.
They also struck gold in the women’s 5,000m on the track as Gudaf Tsegay won the title with compatriot Dawit Seyaum taking bronze. Gudaf also secured a silver in the 1500m.
Letesenbet Gidey triumphed in the women’s 10,000m as Kenya took silver and bronze. Werkuha Getachew was a silver medallist in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with Mekides Abebe picking up the bronze there too, while Lamecha Girma was their other medallist, finishing second in the men’s steeplechase.
Kenya also secured 10 medals, two of them gold. Emmanuel Korir was victorious in the men’s 800m, while Faith Kipyegon won the women’s 1500m title. Their other medalists were Jacob Krop (silver, men’s 5000m), Stanley Mburu (silver, men’s 10,000m) Conseslus Kipruto (bronze, men’s 3000m steeplechase), Mary Moraa (bronze, women’s 800m), Beatrice Chebet (silver, women’s 5000m), Hellen Obiri (silver, women’s 10,000m), Margaret Kipkemboi (bronze, women’s 10,000m), Judith Korir (silver, women’s marathon).
In total, five African nations won events at the Worlds.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan stormed the women’s 100m sprint title, after setting a world record time in semis. Nigeria’s other medal was a silver for Ese Brume in the women’s long jump.
Joshua Cheptegei was golden in the men’s 10,000m to give Uganda their only gold. Jacob Kiplimo also took bronze in that race, while Oscar Chelimo won a bronze in the men’s 5,000m to complete their haul.
Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali won the men’s 3000m steeplechase for their only medal of the Worlds, in an event with an African sweep of the podium as Lamecha Girma from Ethiopia took silver and Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto bronze.
